General Motors makes moves to source rare earth metals for EV motors in North America
Electric motors are powered by irreversible magnets, sometimes no larger than a pack of playing cards, that are made of rare earth metals. These unusual earth magnets, primarily made of neodymium (NdFeB), are nearly totally mined and processed in China. GM said it chose MP Materials for its area and capacity to produce rare earth materials at scale.
Electric motors are powered by long-term magnets, in some cases no bigger than a pack of playing cards, that are made of rare earth metals. The magnets allow the motors to change electrical energy into movement, hence powering the vehicle. These unusual earth magnets, primarily made of neodymium (NdFeB), are almost completely mined and processed in China. GM stated it chose MP Materials for its place and capability to produce uncommon earth materials at scale. The company owns and operates a rare earth mine and processing facility in Mountain Pass, California.
