8-track tapes are a long-retired magnetic tape audio format that precedes the cassette and was utilized as a more portable option to vinyl records to play in automobiles and on boomboxes. No manufacturers make 8-track tapes today, so the whole box set had to be created by tracking down existing tapes and then turning them into brand-new releases.
